(Stable Genius)!

Poll: Half of Americans disapprove of Trump’s performance during Putin summit

Just one-third of Americans say they approve of President Trump’s handling of his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a new poll.

Thirty-three percent of respondents in a Washington Post-ABC poll released early Sunday said they approved of Trump’s handling of his meeting with Putin, while 50 percent said they disapproved.

Among Democrats, just 8 percent approved while 83 percent disapproved. Two-thirds of Republican respondents said they approved, with 18 percent saying they disapproved.

Independents aligned closely with the general population, with 46 percent disapproving and 33 percent approving.

Trump’s summit with Putin, which consisted of a one-on-one meeting behind closed doors, an expanded bilateral session with other officials and a press conference, was intensely criticized by top figures in the media and both political parties.

During the press conference, the president declined to confront Putin over Russian interference in the 2016 election, and cast doubt on his own intelligence community’s assessment of the interference.

He also criticized special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference.

Trump walked back some of his comments more than 24 hours later, saying that he misspoke when he said that he didn’t see any reason why it “would be” Russia who interfered in the election.

The administration also initially said that officials would discuss turning a number of U.S. citizens, including the former U.S. ambassador to Russia, over to Putin for questioning as part of a deal to allow Mueller to question Russian officials. The Senate later approved a resolution warning Trump against handing over U.S. officials.

The Post-ABC poll found that 40 percent of Americans say they think the president went “too far” in supporting Putin at the summit. About 35 percent said the president handled Putin “about right,” and 15 percent said he did not go far enough in supporting the Russian leader.

The poll was conducted among 464 adults between July 18-20, and has a margin of error of 5.5 percentage points.
